How To Find Your Ideal Wedding Venue

Asking the right questions to create your perfect wedding.

How To Find Your Ideal Wedding Venue
You want your wedding day to be perfect in every detail but the process can be daunting, especially if you don’t have a bottomless budget.  There are all those beautiful venues to choose from then, once you’ve made a selection, you have to visit the ones you’ve picked out and try to decide between them.  But it can feel like comparing chalk and cheese, they’re all so different....  Here’s your easy guide to finding the right place for your big day.

Take a good look
Ask to be shown the rooms you’ll be using.  They’re unlikely to be decorated or set up for an event on the day of your visit, so ask to see photos of them as well.  You need to be sure that the space will be big enough for your party to be comfortable, and that the decor will fit with your theme or colour scheme.
You want to get a feel for how your event will flow, too: how close the bar is to the main room, how many rooms you’ll be using, where the bedrooms are in relation to the wedding party rooms (will Great Aunt Elsie be kept awake all night by the band?) and so on.  Ask to see the accommodation as well, especially the bridal suite if there is one.

If you don’t ask ...
Don’t be afraid to ask questions; there’s no such thing as a silly question if you need to know the answer.  Some venues have very definite ideas about what they can and can’t do for you, others are much more flexible.  Unless you absolutely agree with everything the venue thinks is appropriate, go for a more flexible approach.  It’s your day, after all, not theirs.

The main things you’ll need to know are:
1. How many guests can the venue accommodate?   Will there be room for all of them to watch the ceremony, if you’re getting married at the venue?  Do you want everyone to be there for the big moment, or do you want some of them along just for the party?
2. Does the venue have a list of recommended suppliers for flowers, favours, hair and beauty, and so on.  Suppliers who are used to working at the venue may be a good option, but you may have someone you really want to use: does the venue allow you to?  When can you/they get in to set up the room?
3. How much flexibility is there in the menu: will there be a choice of food, and can they cater for people with specific dietary needs?  If the venue isn’t a hotel or restaurant, can they supply caterers, or will you have to arrange that yourself?
4. Is any drink included in the wedding package, or is that all extra?  If it is included, what sort of drinks are available: do they offer champagne or sparkling wine?  Cocktails, a great wine list or a fine selection of whiskies?  Do they offer a late bar service for events?  If you want to supply your own drinks, how much corkage do they charge?
5. If the venue is a hotel, is the bridal suite included, or do you have to pay extra for your accommodation?   Do they offer a preferential accommodation rate for wedding guests?  How many people can they accommodate?  If the venue isn’t a hotel, can they recommend places nearby where guests could stay?
6. Where are the best photo opportunities in the venue or nearby?  If you’re using a local photographer they’ll probably know the best places, but the venue may have some good ideas too.
7. What is the venue’s cancellation policy?  You probably don’t want to think about this, but you never know what’s round the corner.  You’d also be sensible to take out a wedding insurance policy, just in case you have to cancel or postpone your wedding.

"Alan, I wanted to thank you for a great weekend.  All of the lads really enjoyed the hotel, loved the food, appreciated the service and noted your attention to try and keep us all happy.  Of course, the golf was great too, and that helped. We are a well travelled group, we have been going on golfing trips together for 25 years, so the lads know what good looks like and they loved this weekend all round. So big thanks to you for all your efforts.  Hope the rest of the season goes well." Ian Grimwade Stayed July 2017
